The latest round of the Woodland Carbon Guarantee scheme is open for applications.

The scheme aims to increase tree-planting rates in England by allowing landowners to generate an additional long-term income from woodland creation.

It gives successful applicants a guaranteed price for any captured carbon in the form of verified carbon credits they want to sell to the government.

The price for the carbon credits is agreed through an online reverse auction process.

Alternatively, landowners can decide to sell their carbon credit on the open market.

To apply for the Woodland Carbon Guarantee, woodland creation projects need to be registered with and managed under the Woodland Carbon Code.

The next Woodland Carbon Guarantee auction will take place from midday on Monday 21 November to midday on Sunday 27 November 2022.

The application deadline to take part in the auction is the end of Sunday 6 November 2022.

Since the scheme launched in 2019 there have been five previous rounds, with the average price for a verified carbon credit ranging from £17.31/unit (auction 3 in October 2020) to £23.70/unit (auction 5 in May 2022).
