Police are investigating a suspected dog attack on sheep after 20 lambs were found dead in a field near Daventry, Northamptonshire.
Five of the lambs appeared to have been bitten on their legs and necks and the remaining 15 are thought to have died through shock or being crushed as the animals were chased.
The lambs were discovered in the field by a local farmer at 10am on Tuesday 26 July, however it is believed the attack took place sometime after 4pm on Sunday 24 July.

The field is in Charwelton Road, off the A361 in the village of Badby, and Northamptonshire police are appealing for information.
PC Dom Preece, from the force’s rural crime team, said: “Whether farmer or pet owner, the death of an animal is devastating, but all of this is completely avoidable if people walking dogs keep them on a lead and under control around farm animals.
“This simple measure is part of responsible dog ownership, helps to protect pets and livestock alike, and means everyone can enjoy our beautiful countryside both safely and responsibly.”
Harriet Ranson, the NFU’s county adviser for Northamptonshire, said: “Attacks like this take a huge toll on farmers who are dealing with the aftermath of their livestock being killed or injured.
“Their mental health takes a massive blow and there are big implications for the farm business at a time when spiralling costs are hitting farmers hard.”
Anyone with information which could assist the investigation should call Northamptonshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 22000430931.
NFU advice for farmers to prevent sheep worrying
- Put up signs asking dog walkers to keep their dog on a lead around livestock
-
Report every incident of livestock worrying, even if the animals are not directly attacked or killed, so police have a record of all incidents
- Speak to your insurer about what cover is available for livestock worrying
- Contact your local police officer, or dedicated rural crime officer, so you can use them as a point of contact for any future incidents
If your livestock has been attacked or killed:
- If safe to do so, take pictures of the incident to use as evidence, and any other identifying details, for example vehicle details if the person responsible gets into a car
- Speak to your insurer to see if they can offer additional help and advice
