Roslin Technologies’ $12m, Sistema.bio’s $10m: The Week in Agrifoodtech

Foodtech and agtech funding keeps coming, albeit in somewhat smaller amounts these days. This week, Roslin Technologies landed funds for its cell line technology for cultivated meat and Sistema.bio raised capital for its biogas program in Africa. Other notable raises came from shelf-stable meal producer Proper Good and Mexico produce rescue company Perfekto.


Foodtech funding

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Roslin Technologies raises £11 million ($12.8 million) Series A led by Novo Holdings. Roslin aims to become the leading provider of animal cell lines for cultivated meat. (Vegconomist)

🇨🇦 Plant-based snack maker Buddha Brands snags $5.25 million to expand to the US. Capital will also go towards hiring, new products and increasing production development. (Food Business News)

🇺🇸 Proper Good lands $3.5 million seed round for shelf-stable meal products. YETI Capital and Artisan Group led the round, which will fuel Proper Good’s retail expansion. (Food Navigator)

🇲🇽 Perfekto bags $1.1 million to redistribute imperfect produce. The Y Combinator graduate currently rescues food from more than 70 producers in Mexico and delivers it to customers (TechCrunch)

Agtech funding

🇫🇷 Online agribusiness marketplace Agriconomie closes €60 million ($60 million) Series B. Treïs Group, Temasek, and Aliment Capital (formerly Pontifax AgTech) co-led the round. (AFN)

🇰🇪 Sistema.bio raises $10 million from impact investor Native. The investment will go towards a three-year biogas program Sistema is running in East Africa to help small farms cut emissions. (Business Daily Africa)

🇮🇩 Fishery supply chain startup FishLog catches $3.5 million pre-Series A round. BRI Ventures, Accel and Insignia Ventures, amongst others, participated. (Deal Street Asia)

🇮🇩 Indonesia PasarMikro nabs $2.5 million to facilitate upstream ag trade. The seed round included participation from Trihill Capital, Resolution Ventures and Genting Ventures, amongst others. (Tech in Asia)

🇦🇺 Investible leads $500,000 in pre-Series A for agtech startup DataFarming. The latter will put the new funds towards product development as it prepares for its forthcoming Series A. (StartupDaily)

🇳🇱 Carble raises €300,000 seed round to accelerate deforestation-free farming for coffee. Early-stage VC Antler led the round, which will go towards launching the first version of Carble’s carbon insetting plans. (EU Startups)

🇺🇸 Cooperative Ventures makes undisclosed investment in autonomous farm machinery company Sabanto. Sabanto is currently focused on retrofitting 60 to 200 horsepower tractors to operate autonomously. (PR Newswire)

🇮🇱 BioRaptor raises $3 million to bring AI-generated data insights to biotech. lool Ventures and CPT Capital led the round with participation from FoodHack and others. (Protein Report)

M&A, IPOs & partnerships

🇺🇸 🇲🇾 Anuvia Plant Nutrients is partnering with PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad. The two will market and produce Anuvia’s bio-based fertilizer tech in the Asia-Pacific region. (Far.Eastern Agriculture)

🇺🇸 Square Roots and grocery wholesaler United Natural Foods (UNFI) partner. The two companies will co-locate Square Roots’ container vertical farms at UNFI distribution centers in North America. (Vertical Farm Daily)

🇺🇸 🇪🇬 Eat Just‘s GOOD Meat division brings cultivated chicken to COP27 menus. The startup launched a new version of its chicken product at the UN climate event. (BusinessWire)

🇺🇸 Indoor farm robotics startup Iron Ox cuts nearly half its staff. Layoffs are part of the company’s move to refocus on its core areas of technology and engineering. (AFN)

🇬🇧 Vertical Future partners with Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre for Excellence in Plants for Space. The startup and center are researching the best ways to grow food in space. (Vertical Farm Daily)
