The first in-person preservation workshop will be 9-11 a.m. at the AgriLife Extension office in Galveston County, 4102-B Main St., La Marque.

The other two canning events will be held at the same location on Oct. 15 and Nov. 19 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for attending the others.

Registration is required for each event separately. The Sept. 17 event requires registration by Sept. 15 at https://tx.ag/Sept17Canning. There is no cost.

The other workshops cost $30 apiece. The cost covers instruction, class materials and the canned project to take home.

“The first workshop will cover the how and why to can food,” said Ginger Benson, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent for Galveston County. “The other workshops are hands-on and will involve preparing the food, packing it into jars and preservation.”

Registration for the Oct. 15 event opens Sept. 17 at https://tx.ag/Oct15Canning. The Nov. 19 event will open on Oct. 15 at https://tx.ag/Nov17Canning. Each workshop is limited to the first 16 participants.

Contact Benson at 281-309-5049 or ginger.benson@ag.tamu.edu for additional information or questions.

Preserving the harvest topics

The canning series will focus on the following topics:

  • Sept. 17, Introduction to Canning. Science, equipment and safety during the canning process.
  • Oct. 15, Water Bath Canning. Hands-on canning of salsa.
  • Nov. 19, Pressure Canning. Hands-on canning of green beans.
