The cost is $35, which includes instruction, educational materials and two take-home canned creations.

The event is limited to 15 participants and registration is required at https://tx.ag/WillCoCanningReg.

For additional information, contact Katie Sharpton, AgriLife Extension family and community health agent for Williamson County, at 512-943-3300 or katie.sharpton@ag.tamu.edu.

The course is ideal for people wanting to learn to preserve produce from a home garden or local farmers market, Sharpton said. The workshop provides participants the opportunity to learn the latest food safety information and gain experience in a skill that can help them utilize extra fresh produce and cut down on food waste.

Home canning

“Home food preservation is an important and hot topic right now,” she said. “It is critical that those who practice preserving and processing foods at home have access to the most reliable information available concerning food safety and quality.”

Sharpton said the workshop will instruct participants in the following:

  • Learning proper food preservation techniques.
  • Pressure canning vegetables.
  • Water bathing jam preserves.
  • Recipes for home canning.
  • Safe food storage.

All required workshop supplies will be provided. Participants with their own pressure canner may bring it to the event for safety testing.
