Two 4-H members were among the award-winners this month at the 2022 Canada-Wide Science Fair, hosted by the University of New Brunswick Fredericton Campus.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair, held virtually this year, is the country’s largest annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics event, bringing together top young scientists and their projects, selected by a national network of over 100 regional STEM fairs in every province and territory.

Mark Norregaard from Balzac, Alberta, was awarded the Silver Medal — Excellence Award for his project A Comparison of Natural Corrosion Inhibitors on Metals. This award recognizes STEM excellence.

Mac Dykeman from Langley, British Columbia, walked away with two awards — The Canadian Acoustical Association Award and the Challenge Award-Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food — for her project A Simple, Scalable Method for Reducing Stress in Chicks During the First Seven Days Post Hatch. The Canadian Acoustical Association Award is given to an outstanding senior project related to acoustics, the science of sound, while the Challenge Award recognizes outstanding projects that help ensure food security, sustainability, or competitiveness in agriculture, fisheries, or food production. The Challenge Award targets issues that are important to Canada’s youth, the future of our country, and the world.

“The creativity and passion for science from our 4-H members never ceases to amaze me,” said Shannon Benner, 4-H Canada CEO. “Huge congratulations to Mac, Mark, and Alexandra for their innovative projects and impressive results. We know their hard work has inspired the 4-H community across the country, and we look forward to seeing even more projects and participation next year.”

The fair included three days of school and public viewing and welcomed over 50,000 virtual visitors.

4-H Canada’s involvement in CWSF is part of an ongoing commitment to further science and technology skills and knowledge development for youth through 4-H programming. Together, 4-H Canada and Bayer Crop Science Canada are working to spark a passion for STEM in today’s youth leaders. 4-H in Canada has close to 23,500 members and more than 8,500 volunteer leaders.
